The Central Texas region is home to many non-profit organizations that are devoted to making a difference in the lives of those in need. This year, the David's Foundation has taken the initiative to support these organizations by providing free Catchafire memberships to 250 non-profits in central and rural Texas. This program, called One Texas, has been joined by other donors, expanding access to Catchafire for organizations in Dallas and San Antonio. The Public Information Act defines a “governmental body” as any part of an organization, corporation, commission, committee, institution, or agency that receives full or partial support from public funds.
Non-profit corporations are not required to file Form 990 with the Texas Attorney General or the Secretary of State, but they must meet certain requirements and file an application with the IRS and the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. The Texas Business Organizations Code requires that a non-profit corporation have at least three directors, a president and a secretary. The United Way for Greater Austin is another organization that helps local non-profits connect with residents of Austin and the Central Texas area through events and networks. The organization strategically invests in partners and executes proven programs that make a real difference for children and families.
The annual board of directors training program is an immersive, full-day course designed to prepare individuals who are interested in working in a non-profit organization. This program provides valuable insight into the operations of non-profits and how they can be supported. In addition to fundraising, there are other ways to support non-profit organizations in Central Texas. Volunteering is one way to make a difference in the lives of those in need.
During the One Texas initiative, trained volunteers came together collectively to complete more than 500 projects. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it more essential than ever for non-profit organizations to invest in their organizations. The founding members of One Texas believe that even as the pandemic subsides, non-profits will continue to rely on virtual volunteers to improve capacity building and strengthen their organization's capacity to fulfill its mission. If you're looking for ways to help out non-profits in Central Texas, there are plenty of options available.
You can donate money or goods, volunteer your time or skills, or even join the board of directors of an organization. No matter how you choose to support these organizations, your contribution will make a difference.
